Book Box

The homeowners of this semi-detached house in NW DC wanted to convert their rear single car garage to a library for their extensive book collection. In addition, as avid chess players, they needed a home for a chess table that had been used in international competitions.

The main house had been renovated by KUBE several years earlier for a different owner, who used the garage principally for storage. The goal for this adaptive reuse project was to create a sanctuary space that was simple, efficient, economical and inspiring.

A second level was added to the original structure, creating a double height space with a small reading loft accessible by a custom metal ladder. The interior was wrapped in durable, exterior-grade plywood, which brings warmth and texture, while IKEA shelving units, punctuated with LED strips, were placed from floor to ceiling, maximizing storage. To access the highest shelves, a steel catwalk was incorporated at the loft level on one side and a sliding ladder on the opposite wall, ensuring every book is accessible.

Natural light plays a vital role. Solar tubes and large windows bring in daylight throughout the day, transforming this utilitarian and modest urban structure into a bright, inviting retreat.

The spirit of BOOK BOX continues the architectural dialogue begun with the renovation of the original house.
