The concept for the former Caballero factory-site in the Hague is to stimulate creative and innovative activities amongst the tenants. Cross-fertilization between the various disciplines will be enhanced by linking commercial activity and culture. This cross-fertilization is the leading theme for the Binckhorst Innovation Factory redevelopment scheme. Therefore common spaces and meeting points take centre stage. The 12.000 sqm development, situated on the premises of the former factory, comprises 90 work-units ranging from 18 up to 250 sqm each.

The original factory building from 1953 was left untouched, later additions were demolished. The industrial character remains intact while new functions stand out by their different design. The newly created broad corridor which doubles as a meeting place is the backbone of the building. The canteen, the lounge areas and the central reception are located here. The corridor links the 56 units. To save space and to leave the space open and light the conference rooms are hung from the ceiling as wooden boxes. The finish of these and other elements remains raw to preserve the factory athmosphere. Light is an important unifying factor: the reopened skylights and the vitreous sliding doors and walls from transparent Rodeca create an light, open and homogenous space. Printed screens in front of the main facade define the exterior view.

The Caballero Fabriek won both the Jury Award and the Audience Award of the New City Award of The Hague 2006.
