Located on the seventh floor of a tower building from the 70s, on the edge of the historic centre of Forlì, the apartment kept the original configuration intact: a rigid distribution system, separate rooms and different floors in each room. The project stems from the desire to transform this structure without erasing its identity. The existing pavements thus become the starting point of a new organisation of space, in which the material memory of the house guides contemporary design.
A system to be rethought
Designed as a support for a couple who wanted to recover a bond with his hometown, the apartment required a distribution more suitable for contemporary use. The request was to unify the kitchen and living room and to obtain a wardrobe, while fully maintaining the original floors. The meaning of the project was already concentrated in this constraint: to intervene on the house without interrupting the relationship with its history.
The floor as a trace and structure
The demolition of some internal scores would inevitably leave fragments of pavement in the new unified space. From this criticality comes the design idea: to reinterpret existing surfaces as stone carpets, connected by a clear resin capable of building continuity. Floors are not treated as a residue to be disguised, but as a trace to be made readable and active. Their geometry thus defines the different areas of the house and accompanies the new articulation of the environments.
A new domestic unit
The new house is organised in an open space living area and a more collected sleeping area, separated by a large equipped wall, tailor-made, which integrates containers, passages and functions. An essential contemporary language is grafted on this background: natural oak, light resin, neutral surfaces and a few chromatic accents define a measured balance between recognisability and lightness. The result is a fluid and coherent space, in which past and present coexist without overlapping, transforming the original identity of the apartment into an essential component of living.
