The renovation of an ancient house in Guardiagrele involved myself emotionally form the beginning. This house in the past until 1950s was a space where a generation of apprentices use to come and learn the art of knives making. Here a well-known and highly estimated master use to live before the house was definitely closed.
In fact, the name of “Casa del Ferro” is a sort of contribution that I wanted to underline with the interior design trough the staircase and architectural finishes.
The existing house developed in depth and the theme of how to bring natural light into the building was one of the first problem to work on to create warm spaces within the house.
The design starts from this necessity to work on the section by inserting skylights and creating a sort of relationship between the first and the mezzanine by removing part of floor, obtaining a double height space behind the main façade.
The ground floor was once the work space, in fact we wanted to leave it free bare of walls or additions but only a curved wall, a sort of installation where to hide the sanitary.
The first floor, on the other hand, is the place where the living room/kitchen and double bedroom are located. The bathroom was designed as if it were a spa, we wanted to keep the old fireplace and insert a bathtub illuminated by the skylight at the top.
Going up the iron staircase we reach the mezzanine floor where the music room and a service bathroom are located. The interior wall surfaces are coated with a rough lime plaster in order to capture natural light, while the floors are made with parquet oak finishes with the exception of the cement resin bathroom surface.
