The old house is a remnant of the rural era of the Scorcola hill area, just a few minutes away from Trieste’s neoclassical waterfront. Starting from the construction of the historical funicular railway in 1902, known as the “tram di Opicina”, the hill was urbanized and became within the 60’s and 70’s a mid-rise buildings residential area.

The aim of the renovation project is to preserve the atmosphere of the place through the restoration of its original elements, neglecting the traditional and local restoration techniques, in order to express some extreme potential of the building still recognizing its constructive nature.

The stone of the main walls is revealed to express the purity of the building, as a container of the totally renewed interiors. The frontal facade as well as the internal program reveal the pre-existence of two buildings: the bigger one defines served spaces as living and bed rooms; the smaller and older building contains service and functional devices, including the entrance, the stairs and bathrooms.

The ground floor, where the vertical space of the house is crossed with the garden, is covered with the continuous surface of the flooring that reveals the multifunctional nature of the space. Recycling the old wood beams and old roof tiles, was the choice for paving outdoor spaces and the rooms of the first and second level.

Front garden is green and intended for leisure and sunbaths , back courtyard is mineral looking and is intended for vegetable garden and shaded barbecue.
