Casa Fortuna, a residential project located in the historic center of Oaxaca City, Mexico, stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional architectural heritage with contemporary design principles. RootStudio, under the leadership of principal architect João Boto Cæiro, embarked on the meticulous reconstruction of this 16th-century building, aiming to preserve its original layout while infusing it with modern comfort and sustainability.
The brief for Casa Fortuna was clear: to honor the historical significance of the site while creating a space that meets the needs of contemporary living. RootStudio faced several key challenges during the project, including the restoration of the original layout and structures, integrating sustainable design practices, and sourcing materials that complemented both the historical context and the modern aesthetic.
Preserving the authenticity of the building while ensuring its functionality for modern inhabitants required a delicate balance. RootStudio approached this challenge by meticulously restoring the original layout, including the two adjoining courtyards and the water channel connecting them. The use of adobe walls finished with lime mortar, native timber beams, and green quarry floors not only pays homage to traditional building techniques but also enhances the sustainability of the project by utilizing locally-sourced materials.
