Casa Hidalgo

Casa Hidalgo, nestled in the heart of Oaxaca City, Mexico, emerges as a modern architectural gem born from the fusion of traditional Mexican roots and contemporary design trends. RootStudio, led by principal architect João Boto Cæiro, transformed the remains of a 16th-century building into a sleek, single-volume residence that embodies the studio's ethos of recycling, preservation, and modernity.

The brief for Casa Hidalgo was to create a contemporary home on a small footprint while honoring the site's rich historical heritage. RootStudio faced several key challenges during the project, including the integration of modern amenities within a limited space, the restoration of existing structures, and the seamless blending of old and new architectural elements.

Despite its compact size, Casa Hidalgo boasts an open and flexible floor plan spread across two floors and a rooftop terrace adorned with a large avocado tree. The restoration of original walls and materials, such as adobe, ceramic tiles, and wood, provided a stark contrast to the modern surroundings, creating a dynamic interplay of textures and tones that celebrate the site's historic character.

The choice of materials was crucial in achieving the desired fusion of ancient and modern elements. Recycled adobe walls and traditional ceramic tiles pay homage to the region's vernacular architecture, while steel, glass, and contemporary finishes introduce a sleek, minimalist aesthetic. The incorporation of green quarry stone from previous foundations not only adds visual interest but also enhances the ecological footprint of the project.

Inside, the public area features an open layout with porcelain tile floors, seamlessly connecting the living room, kitchen, and dining room. Upstairs, the private area comprises two bedrooms and washrooms with warm wooden floors that provide insulation and acoustic comfort. Throughout the interior, a monochromatic palette of black and white is accented with pops of color, creating a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere.

Collaboration with local master craftspeople was instrumental in the design and execution of custom furniture and decorative elements. Retro pieces blend seamlessly with limewashed walls, adding warmth and character to the space while promoting sustainable design practices.

In Casa Hidalgo, RootStudio successfully merges tradition with innovation, creating a timeless space that reflects the architectural heritage of Oaxaca while embracing contemporary living. This project serves as a testament to the studio's commitment to sustainable design, cultural preservation, and the seamless integration of old and new.
