Casa Nepi

The house is located in the historic center of the city of Nepi (Italy), in one of the two main squares of the town, characterized by the presence of the Cathedral, its everpresent facade and bell-tower. In a so strongly characterized surrounding, the interiors are totally foreign with respect to the external environment and deliberately do not communicate with it.

The original structure was a modest and simple house on three levels, the result of several and incoherent mergers occurred over time. A single facade, coherently designed at the beginning of the nineteen century, unified the building. The project makes no compromises with the existing environment. In fact, the interiors has been completely reinvented, drained and emptied of all structures (only the perimeter bearing walls of the original building have been retained) and redeveloped on seven levels.

The circulation that connects all these different levels defines the space: a spiral path that winds around a suspended volume in a continuous movement through which the "spectator" has constant but differing views of the house, from the garden level up to the terrace. A blank, corresponding to a skylight on the terrace, vertically cut the house in parallel with the two facades, on the square and on the garden, bringing natural light to the center.

The choice of simple details, the use of few materials, strictly natural (stone, wood and glass) and basic furnishings, focus attention exclusively on space and light.
