Casa Pellas is a 62-square-meter apartment that underwent a complete renovation and is located within a Liberty-style building in the historic center of Perugia. The design objective was to reinterpret a classical context through a contemporary language—without altering the building’s original identity, but enhancing it through coherent compositional, material, and chromatic choices.
The concept originates from the idea that color can be integrated with the classical geometry of the rooms, generating a controlled balance between past and present. The natural oak herringbone floor serves as the unifying element of the project: a timeless material, laid with precision, that provides both visual continuity and a warm, neutral foundation for the entire apartment.
Vertical volumes are designed to structure and articulate the spaces. Surfaces are treated with pastel tones—ocean blue, brick red, and leather—selected to bring depth, elegance, and a distinctive chromatic identity. Color assumes not only an aesthetic role but also a functional one: it defines the various zones, guides perception, and accompanies the sequence of rooms, becoming a true design tool.
A load-bearing wall was removed to create a full-height opening, following a preliminary technical assessment, visually and physically connecting the dining area with the living room. This new opening enhances spatial usability, increases natural light, and provides distributive fluidity within a compact floor plan.
The dining room, intimate yet carefully designed, communicates directly with the living area, where a custom-made Rosa Portogallo marble table—crafted by a local workshop—becomes the focal point of the space. The choice of a natural material introduces a strong visual and tactile presence that harmonizes with the chromatically characterized walls.
The project follows a compositional logic based on recurring palettes, textures, and materials, which appear across the various rooms as defining identity elements. This narrative continuity establishes a recognizable and cohesive design language, reinforced by the selection of large-format artworks and a calibrated lighting system that combines technical and decorative fixtures working in synergy.
Special attention was devoted to lighting: the integration of iconic fixtures and concealed light sources allows for differentiated atmospheres, enhances the perception of volumes, and ensures functional performance suited to the needs of daily living. Each lighting element was chosen to dialogue with materials and colors, contributing to an overall sense of harmony rather than dominating the space.
Casa Pellas emerges as a compact yet highly distinctive apartment in which every decision—from layout to materiality, from light to color—contributes to creating a contemporary, functional environment that acknowledges and elevates its architectural heritage. A project that respects the memory of the place while reinterpreting it with a strong and recognizable design identity.
