The Casadetodos project is a single family house at the base of the Andes, at El Arrayan zone, Santiago de Chile. The work basically explores the potential of nonconventional structures, the creation of complex surfaces and the opening to the mountain. The structural strategy consists on locating four steel frames successively. Those are conceived as a family of similar pieces that repeat and vary according to the spatial-programmatic and structural requirements. The pieces modify their angles and support points, articulating the program. It is an associative design in terms of the interdependence that is achieved between the different parts. If any node of the structure is moved, the total morphology reacts and transforms. The structure balances between the limits of its inclination according to its dynamic requirements. The result is an abstract system where the forces that run along it appear evident. Building the structural diagrams literally with very slim profiles, exposed naked at the interior and exterior of the house. The differentiation of the structural axes generate ruled surfaces that create a doubled curved surface. This acquires its major expression on the rooftop terrace, where a space contained between two warped surfaces. The site is almost completely steep. The high zone is chosen, where the slope is lower, to locate the house, in order to facilitate the constructive process and to obtain the best views.
The internal spatial configuration allows to obtain views towards the mountain in almost every room. The house is oriented to the south, facing the Andes. As this spatial organization doesn´t allow direct sun, the upper rooms are illuminated by skylights, while the inferior rooms get sun from an interior central patio, which also allows for crossed ventilation.
The constructive technique is compossed of steel as main structure, and wood as a secondary one. The walls –none of them structural- are also prefab wooden elements, as the cladding. This leaves a minimum of rubble and accelerates the constructive process, as all the unions are dry. The use of wood permits a lower load. On the other hand the wood establishes a dialogue with the landscape, as the material and color belong to the place; while the warped surfaces recalls the mountain’s topography.
