The project consists of the renovation of an existing end of terrace house with a two-storey side extension and storey and half rear extension to house a new open plan living space. 

The new open plan kitchen/dining/family area to the rear is conceived as a pavilion addressing the south facing garden and is defined by four deep brick piers with a concrete cornice to provide solar shading, which in turn supports a central glazed lantern wrapped in an external timber screen. External landscaping details respond to the linear nature of the brick piers. The internal walls are also of brick, and a fifth brick pier supports the corner of the original house. The internal brickwork and new polished concrete floor are softened by the internal joinery which is a mixture of oak and pale pink. The double height lantern space provides volume, diffused light and incorporates high-level planting, creating a hanging garden.

Due to the split-level nature of the existing layout and the limited scope of the brief, modest and practical solutions were considered to improve access to and within the house and garden. Solutions include improvement to the approach to the entrance with a defined pathway, the reconfiguration, replacement and improvement of the existing stepped access to the lower ground floor. New ground floor bathroom facilities have been installed to provide accessible facilities for visitors and guests.

The house, which had a BER E rating, addresses a long south facing garden. The existing footprint included a significant amount of south facing glazing which created difficult living conditions in the summer months. 

The design response was a fabric first approach which meant retaining and improving the maximum amount of the existing fabric, which included working with the original footprint. The works included complete deep retrofit of the existing fabric including floors, walls, rooves and glazing.  A new air to water heat pump was installed to provided heating for the house. Bring the house up to BER Rating of A2

The GGBS concrete cornice supported on the brick piers and timbers fins at high level act as a passive solar shading devices to improve the comfort of the occupants in the summer and remove the need for artificial cooling, while maximising daylight. A new openable roof light has been installed in the existing roof to provide daylight to the hall and stairs while also insuring cross ventilation for the new spaces.

The design sought to improve and increase the internal planting to provide improved air quality.
