Channel 24 –the newest entertainment venue design by CAW Architects, in partnership with Ellis Architects, is a newly constructed 40,614 SF space in Sacramento, designed to accommodate 2,200 patrons. Commissioned by Another Planet Entertainment, the project is the only independent, locally owned, full-service concert production company in Northern California. By combining innovative engineering, acoustics, and architectural expression, the venue establishes a cultural landmark, bringing world-class live performances to Sacramento and energizing its evolving urban core.
The design draws inspiration from the industrial character of the surrounding neighborhood, expressed through a material palette of exposed concrete, metal paneling, and visible structure. Inside, the architecture focuses on the performance experience: a nearly column-free hall defined by 100-foot-long steel roof trusses and tiered balconies cantilevering 35 feet into the space. The steeply raked side balcony platforms are a standout feature, a highly innovative design that brings patrons closer to the stage while providing exceptional sightlines from every angle.
Engineering solutions played a critical role in both performance and comfort. The balconies are equipped with tuned-mass dampers to counteract audience-induced vibrations, while grouted masonry walls and a nine-inch concrete roof deck provide robust acoustic containment to protect the surrounding neighborhood. The proscenium surround and integrated curtain lighting systems allow the architecture itself to respond to performances, shifting mood and atmosphere to match each act.
Public lobbies on both floors, concessions, and gathering spaces were designed with wood accents, colorful murals, and adaptable lighting that reinforce the energy of live music. Back-of-house spaces support performers and staff with efficient circulation, dressing rooms, offices, and a dedicated loading bay. Inside the hall, industrial finishes are balanced with touches of warmth and luxury, including wood detailing and velvet curtains that soften the room while enhancing acoustics.
The venue was recently awarded the Structural Engineers Association Award for Excellence in New Construction Under $80M at both the Central California and statewide levels.
