Perched on the edge of a lush ravine in Edmonton, Canada, The Clifton is a 12-storey tower with a total of 20 estate residences. An homage to the river valley and to the Royal Alberta Museum, the Clifton is an act of monumental simplicity.
Designed as two limestone slabs that rise at the edge of the embankment, the building turns its back to the eastern city with a monumental blankness, while facing the western valley with a liquid transparency optimizing views and outdoor living. These vertical slabs are positioned precariously on garden walls that anchor the building to the hill, teasing out a relationship between the city and the wilderness, the street edge and the secret garden beyond.
