For over 140 years, the Club sportif MAA has been a cornerstone of Montreal life—a place where tradition, community, and well-being converge. Founded in 1881 and established at its current location since 1905, the Club is a symbol of the Golden Square Mile’s social and physical vitality. To preserve this historic landmark while adapting it to the demands of the 21st century, the Club partnered with a developer to introduce a high-rise tower, welcoming new residents to the neighborhood while maintaining the Club’s legacy.
Honoring History Through Design
LemayMichaud was entrusted with designing both the tower and the new sports club interiors, tasked with the delicate challenge of preserving 142 years of history while infusing modern elegance and functionality. The design draws inspiration from the era of the original building, honoring its architectural heritage while creating warm, state-of-the-art spaces for contemporary use.
The double-height lobby—the centerpiece of the new entrance—celebrates the Club’s past while fostering social connection. At its heart, an architectural staircase extends across two levels, establishing a natural meeting point for members. Marble floors echo the nobility of the original 1905 staircase, blending tradition with a sense of contemporary grandeur.
The first-floor bistro offers a welcoming, independent space. A custom-molded stone fireplace serves as a visual anchor, complementing the reception wall opposite. Display cases showcasing historic trophies subtly separate the bistro from the lobby, reinforcing the Club’s identity. Graphic murals composed of archival photos integrate the Club’s rich history directly into the new design, making heritage tangible for members.
The main gym, spread over two floors, is flooded with natural light, creating an airy and invigorating environment. Seven distinct studios—including Pilates, spinning, two squash courts, Jukari, and CrossFit—provide specialized spaces, each designed with a unique identity. The Club also offers physiotherapy and massage therapy services in a calm, streamlined clinic environment, complemented by a semi-Olympic pool, Finnish saunas, and hammams. Every element has been designed to deliver a fully integrated, state-of-the-art training experience.
Balancing Tradition and Innovation
Throughout the project, the team balanced respect for tradition with the need for modern amenities. Every material choice, spatial arrangement, and design detail reflects the Club’s commitment to excellence, ensuring that members experience both the warmth of history and the excitement of contemporary design.
In transforming the Club sportif MAA, LemayMichaud has created a timeless yet forward-looking space where heritage, elegance, and innovation coexist—offering Montrealers a landmark that continues to inspire, connect, and thrive for generations to come.
