Nestled amongst treetops and overlooking a serene coastal enclave, Cove House by Decus Interiors reimagines an existing family home with liveability and refined sophistication. In designing both alternations and additions to the established home, the Sydney based studio led by founder Alexandra Donohoe Church united architecture and interior design to seamlessly connect the inside and out to breathtaking effect.
Articulating a design language that is contemporary yet restrained, quiet yet layered, the project was naturally inspired by its stunning location: a heritage eucalyptus tree that shades the living area informing the palette and numerous material choices. With entertaining an integral part of the young family’s life, features such as an outdoor bar and pizza oven are convivial and play to their strengths as welcoming hosts in lush surrounds.
Working within the confines of immovable structural features proved challenging, however in striving for cohesion, intelligent responses were devised, such as encasing existing exterior steel columns, visible from the living spaces, to create a softer, circular form. The desire for natural light in the living spaces led to the creation of a pop-up copula, raising the ceiling above the dining table, and installing a 13 metre expanse of full height, glazed, sliding doors that connect the interior with glorious coastal views.
“Working on this project was a joy,” says Donohoe Church. “My favourite moments are not a specific room or space, instead they’re those simple and understated textural gestures, such as the curved polished plaster fireplace, and the stunning green fluted marble credenza. We’re passionate about forging a new design language within the residential interior landscape and these features really speak to that vision.”
By nurturing a client relationship of intimacy and trust, Decus Interiors have imagined an evocative outcome that elevates the everyday with refined sophistication. Cove House is a quiet, considered and layered family home that responds to the contemporary needs of the client, demonstrating that by celebrating the individuality of each project and each client, truly original outcomes can be achieved.
