The day activity building for Esdégé-Reigersdaal at the municipal children’s farm De Bongelaar in Heerhugowaard provides daytime support for people with disabilities. It fits naturally into the green, park-like surroundings of the farm. The building offers a safe, clear, and homely place for daily activities, where people can choose to be together or spend time on their own.
Inspired by the traditional wooden barn, the building has a simple and recognizable overall shape. The façade highlights the rhythm of the visible roof trusses and structural grid, allowing the construction to be experienced from the outside. The low gutter line and wooden cladding, with its natural color and texture, give the building a friendly appearance and a comfortable human scale. The minimalist detailing strengthens the clarity and simplicity of the design. The covered veranda and canopy mark the transition between inside and outside, offering shelter and creating inviting places where clients can meet or find a quiet moment. The chimney is not just functional, but has also been carefully designed as part of the building’s character.
The layout is carefully designed to balance the users’ need for privacy and social interaction. Spaces where calm is important, such as the canteen, are located on the quieter waterside of the building. Areas that require supervision, such as the staff office, are clearly visible to clients and overlook the square and the entrance to the farm. The canteen opens up towards the meadow, allowing clients to enjoy the view while still being able to sit in more sheltered corners without losing contact with others.
In this way, the building supports daily activities where people with different abilities work, learn, and meet in a natural and calming environment. The spatial layout, use of natural materials, and clear organization contribute to a sense of safety, familiarity, and pride. The building has an effortless simplicity, creating a place that is not only functional but, above all, a warm and meaningful environment for everyone who works and spends time there.
