De Nieuwe Held
Specht architecture and urban planning

A pleasure gazebo for the De Nieuwe Held residential area

The new residential area De Nieuwe Held will be developed over the next ten years. More than 1,800 homes, shops, healthcare facilities, and public space will be realized northwest of Groningen.

Specht architectuur en stedenbouw, together with the Municipality of Groningen and Karres en Brands (landscape), has developed the urban planning scheme and the visual quality plan.

For this task, temporary accommodation is required for the Municipality of Groningen's project office and a care support center for the future residential area. Together, they form the pioneering project of De Nieuwe Held. The project office will also serve as a rentable community center, which current and future residents can use for recreation and education.

The building consists of workspaces and practice rooms, with parking for bicycles and cars. There will be a publicly accessible roof terrace where people can relax, hold meetings, and have lunch, and from where the progress of the development of the new residential area can be overseen.

The sustainable, temporary building is constructed from temporarily combined container units on a lightweight foundation of rubble and precast concrete Stelcon slabs. This makes the building easy to relocate or transform after ten years. The container units will be finished in anthracite grey. This also applies to all window frames, rainwater drains, roller shutters, and facades. Surrounding this is a wooden latticework that envelops the containers like a second skin. By adding climbing plants, the woven wooden facade will stand as a green crown in the new housing development. The greened wooden woven facade will act as sun shading and provide cooling in the summer.
