Desert Butterfly

Single family custom residence with separate guest house located on an extreme hillside lot. The goals of the client were to maximize the limited buildable area to meet their specific needs, capture views and mountain shading, while creating a structure that incorporated green design concepts, efficient building systems and a modern aesthetic.

The exterior of the home is a combination of textured and smooth mass walls designed into the site between existing boulders and rock outcroppings. Four exterior materials are used; natural stacked stone, smooth faced composite panels, metal roof/wall panels and glass. All materials run seamlessly from the exterior to the interior.

Rain water collection, photo-voltaics, solar water heating, effluent water reuse and siphonic drain systems are all located below grade or integrated into the design of the home and are hidden from view.

Interior features include fsc certified wood veneers, zoned hvac system and a fully integrated home automation system. All paints, sealants, coatings and caulks on the interior of the home are zero or low voc. Universal design and aging in place concepts are incorporated throughout the house.

The main house is designed to be leed silver compliant. The guest house is designed to be leed platinum compliant.
