The Diener-Areal is situated in Schwamendingen, in a quarter on the perimeter of Zurich. The idea of a large-scale garden city was implemented there after World War II. The new residential building with 51 apartments is dedicated to the idea of a garden city through its small footprint and also tackles the tough reality of today’s spatial structure. It’s stocky, graded volume and the clear facade design of aluminium makes it a new landmark in the quarter. The apartment types are directly derived from the cross-section and the different depths ot the building. On the stories above, the apartments’ strongest characteristic is their depth of 19 meters combined with a room heigth of 2.70 meters. The winter gardens, from which the apartments are accessed, and a furnishing core consisting of a kitchen and bathroom, organise the apartment’s space. A free load-bearing structure of struts allows flexible finishing and provides freedom for individual living preferences and room divisions.
