Diversionary Theatre was founded in 1986 to provide quality theatre for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. The mission of the theatre is to produce plays with gay, lesbian and bisexual themes that portray characters in their complexity and diversity both historically and contemporarily. Public provided a sheltered outdoor gathering area in front of the theater that plays with the qualities of light in the day and evening. The structure is hinged, to open over the sidewalk for future films and art walks. Public's redesign has provided a public space with personal feel for the creative, lively, theatre going members of this diverse community.
