This single-family house project is part of a process of remodelling and changing an existing house in a low-density residential area in the Vitacura district. On a plot of approximately 400 m2 the existing house was almost unrecognisable from the original as a result of precarious and poorly executed extensions.
The strategy for the intervention of the existing was to intervene the spaces in its interior distribution in a minimal way with very precise extensions and demolitions to achieve more continuity of the social spaces on the first floor and improve conditions of natural light and habitability on the second level where the bedrooms are distributed. Likewise, the strategy for the expression of the exterior was to unify the compact two-level volume using handmade brick in all its expressive and tectonic dimension.
The handmade brick was transformed into a cladding that allowed us to improve the thermal insulation condition, especially on the existing first floor, which was built in a light manner prior to this intervention. The cubic volume was completely clad giving the existing house a new unitary expression devoid of the different patches of its historical evolution and different owners.
Taking advantage of the constructive versatility of handmade brick, expressive lattices and textures were incorporated into different facades in relation to functions of solar control, privacy and the accent of relief.
