Dutch Transparency
Teerawat Winyarat

The Dutch Embassy in Bangkok

In a political climate tormented by coups and opaque procedure, the image of the Dutch embassy persists in its transparency.

The embassy is located next to the diplomatic post of the United States in the middle of the Thai metropolis of Bangkok, wedged between the busy Wireless Road and the calm Soi Tonson. This location is exceptionally green, in comparison with local standards. The new chancellery is placed on an island surrounded by a green oasis in an effort to lessen the nuisance from Wireless Road.

The building consists of two components. The lower oblong section, housing the chancellery and the upper/outer section which rests upon it. The upper part of the building is comprised of a metal roof and an obscured façade. It, together with the surrounding trees offer climatic protection. The ensuing dialogue between base structure and the peripheral façade is a paradigmatic relationship between permanent and temporary.
