In 2022, Sno-Isle Libraries was presented with an opportunity to transform their Edmonds, WA. Library to better meet the needs of their community after damage from a catastrophic flood caused by a damaged water line. Sno-Isle Libraries partnered with Seattle-based Johnston Architects (JA) to revitalize the Library’s 17,566 square foot facility, creating an inviting ‘third place’ where visitors of all ages can engage, learn, and play.
The refreshed library now includes a flexible community room that can open up to the library with a movable glass way, includes book stacks on wheels for increased mobility, and intentionally varied seating options and furnishings to meet the needs of patrons with different abilities, ages, and sensory needs. Natural light floods the space through large windows, framing views of downtown Edmonds, the Puget Sound, and surrounding nature.
A brand-new children’s space captivates a younger generation of learners by combining digital and analog features to produce an immersive piece that entertains children and adults alike. JA creatively infused dynamic movement and experiential design into the space with a floor-to-ceiling digital pegboard installation. This interactive feature encourages cooperative play and problem-solving, demonstrating how technology can enhance learning experiences.
Additionally, the children’s area features a sculptural play installation inspired by the rocky shores of Edmonds. This child-sized “pebble” shelter allows children to engage in imaginative play, providing a perfect spot for hide-and-seek or a quiet reading nook on less busy days.
Libraries designed by JA honor the notion of a ‘third place’ while incorporating innovative technology and expanding learning and engagement opportunities for all, cementing their commitment to designing spaces that meet the changing needs of communities.
