Design Concept
Upon first entering the site slated for renovation, the low ceiling, irregular layout, and dim lighting posed significant challenges for the design team. However, Pastor Lin Zhongxiang held a clear vision: to create a warm and comfortable faith space where young people could feel at ease. The design team aimed to help visitors overlook the ceiling height limitations by reorganizing the fragmented space and cleverly transforming the originally poor lighting into a beautiful stage of light and shadow.
The design of a religious space goes beyond mere functionality—it carries the transmission of faith, guiding people toward the depths of their souls. Located in Nanzi, Kaohsiung, Excellence Church embraces the concept of a “gallery-like fellowship,” aspiring to be a spiritual haven for congregants while also attracting the attention of younger generations.
Design Inspiration
Inspired by the soft natural light that bathes museum interiors, the design seeks to warmly embrace every visitor, much like an art gallery. The space avoids excessive decoration, using clean lines and proportional changes to embody the essence of faith—simple yet profound.
Design Details
The three-tone acoustic panels on the walls not only reduce echo but also serve as artistic elements, adding a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The ceiling’s slatted design cleverly conceals pipelines while mitigating sound interference, creating a calm and stable environment.
Main Stage Design
As the visual focal point, the podium features a heavy iron baked finish symbolizing steadfast faith. The off-center column design allows the speaker’s silhouette to be fully presented, fostering a closer connection with the congregation. The subdued gray tones focus attention on the sermon itself. The cross-shaped column profile subtly yet deeply integrates the essence of faith into the spatial details.
Integration of Faith and Space
The renovation of Excellence Church is more than a visual update—it infuses the warmth of faith into the design. Through minimalist lines, soft lighting, and meticulous details, the space creates a warm yet solemn atmosphere where every visitor can find their own corner to feel the power of faith and the tranquility of the soul.
