Design Concept
For this project, STUDIO J undertook the renovation of Ying Cha Xiang Huaxia, a tea house located in Kaohsiung. The brand spirit of Ying Cha Xiang is “Achieve a better self with a cup of tea,” encouraging customers to relax and recharge during their tea moments. Therefore, we chose the British Vintage style as the main design theme for the space.
During the renovation, STUDIO J transformed the interior and storefront of the original aging tea house into an elegant street-side tea room reminiscent of a hidden corner in a British alley. The design aims to create a warm and graceful ambiance, allowing guests to experience authentic British charm locally. In the leisurely afternoon hours, visitors can savor the rich flavors of English afternoon tea, taking time to fully relax their body, mind, and spirit.
Storefront Design
The storefront design creates the first impression for customers. The entrance features transparent, crystal-clear glass panels, with a white glass door that conveys a clean and open feel. Paired with a clear, gold three-dimensional sign, the design echoes the charm of a classic British street-side shop. This inviting façade attracts passersby, encouraging them to pause and curiously explore the interior space.
Upon entering Ying Cha Xiang Huaxia, guests are greeted by the inviting aroma of tea. The overall space is designed with warm wood tones, creating a calm and understated tranquility. The floor is laid with scratch-resistant, durable PVC planks that evoke a fresh and cozy wooden texture—much like stepping into a quaint tea shop in Notting Hill. This space offers a peaceful afternoon tea retreat where visitors can relax their minds and rejuvenate while savoring their tea.
Display Design
The moment visitors push open the door, they are greeted by a harmonious blend of tea aromas, floral scents, and peachy fruit notes. This fragrant fusion immediately immerses guests in a tea-infused atmosphere, allowing them to feel a sense of nourishment for the soul as they step inside.
On the left side, a wooden display cabinet showcases 52 different tea varieties, accompanied by a wooden aroma table featuring scent vessels, allowing visitors to personally experience the charm of the teas.
At the far right corner of the left display cabinet, the designer created a cozy nook imbued with British charm. The cabinet’s angled design forms a distinctive focal point, where exquisite and refined decor blends with the warm aroma of tea—evoking the serene feeling of wandering through a historic English tea house.
Island Counter Design
Moving through the store toward the island area, the counter is designed to facilitate close interaction between tea masters and customers during tea tasting. The solid wood island showcases unique wood grain textures, complemented by vintage-style pendant lights that enhance the elegant British ambiance. Stylish stools provide a comfortable spot for customers to rest while selecting their preferred teas and engaging with staff. Guests can listen to detailed introductions about the unique characteristics of each tea, gaining a deeper understanding of British tea culture. Meanwhile, they can enjoy watching the tea brewing process unfold during their wait.
Tea Tasting Area Design
The deep blue floral wallpaper running throughout the space echoes Ying Cha Xiang’s corporate color palette. Decorative wall frames were carefully selected to suit the spatial context with artistic touches. The soft furnishings feature classic British-style outdoor round tables and chairs. With carefully adjusted lighting and thoughtful coordination, the area presents a unique and comfortable atmosphere for tea tasting.
Achieving a Better Self
The client expressed appreciation for STUDIO J’s meticulous attention to the space, particularly highlighting the storefront design, fine details, and soft furnishings. Additionally, the client noted that during the project’s finishing stages, the team proactively identified and addressed potential issues, demonstrating STUDIO J’s dedication and professionalism. We are grateful for the client’s recognition and valuable feedback. STUDIO J aims to provide customers with a comfortable and welcoming environment and hopes this space allows visitors to find a more harmonious version of themselves.
