Eyebox is a Manhattan-based eyewear boutique and vision clinic hybrid, designed by KBA and finished in 2024. The project's goal was to unite the space's two roles—professional eye exams and glasses shopping—into a single, energetic environment that feels cohesive rather than divided.
KBA led the architectural and interior design work, teaming up with Ryan Soames Engineering DPC and general contractor Ariel Consultants to execute the vision. Photographer Zach Pontz documented the finished result.
At the heart of the concept is the exam room itself, the "eyebox," which KBA placed front and center in the showroom layout rather than hiding it in a back office. By putting the clinical side on display, the studio reframed what's usually a routine medical step into a highlighted part of the customer's visit, making the search for the right prescription and frames feel like part of the story rather than a separate errand.
The outcome is a store that dissolves the usual boundary between clinical and commercial design, pointing to a new way specialty health services can live inside a lively, retail-forward setting. With Eyebox, KBA demonstrates its knack for treating practicality and pleasure not as competing priorities, but as two sides of the same design.
