Nestled in the Foothills of Alberta, this abode was the dream for a couple from Calgary, who were looking to combine the easy country life with the modern elements of the city.
In 2018, we were approached by our clients with a sprawling piece of land and a vision of creating a home that could blend both of their ideals. The Mera Studio team was given the challenge of combing a cozy farmhouse vibe, essential to one homeowner, with the clean, sleek elements of a contemporary city home, which was important to the other. Challenge accepted!
By implementing full wall to wall windows and a metal façade, we were able to balance modern elements with familiar farmhouse details and warm wood tones on the interior. Making the view the primary focus was a detail that everyone could agree upon and the expansive windows allowed the living space to open up into the hillside. Pulling the colors and textures of the natural surroundings was key to making the home feel like it had always been there, a true farmhouse rooted in the simplicity of the landscape and rural life. In contrast, clean lines and smooth hard surfaces layered that city aesthetic into the space and framed the view of rolling hills and expansive rural landscape.
Finding the right aesthetic balance and a design that our clients could enjoy for many years to come was not always a linear process, but ultimately this roost is a true representation of what can be achieved when two ideas meet in middle...and in this case, in the middle of a serene Alberta June grass field!
Brief Summary: A new build residence on a picturesque surround of the Municipal of Foothills, located near Millarville, Alberta. This 5,500 square foot residence was inspired by simple rural forms and the use of raw materials. The home boasts many unique features from a beautiful, screened porch with patio and stunning views, to a year-round outdoor shower. A house on a hill, this design is not boastful. This is a home that favors simplicity and practicality. A home that looks like it has always been a staple in the vast landscape.
