An inhabitable landscape, this building emerges out of the surrounding streetscape to embrace Bondi’s arc of sun and surf. Clad in raw unpainted materials, it expresses a singular presence atypical of multiunit dwellings.
Finishes have been selected to weather the coastal environment.
High-quality, long-lasting materials such as sandstone, off-form concrete and rendered brick achieve both tactility and durability.
A muscular concrete frame allows for long spans and large openings to the breeze and sweeping views.
Comprising of six apartments over three levels, the building replaces a free-standing brick apartment block. The land slopes steeply from the rear to the northern street boundary. Deep bands of landscaping merge with established native growth to the east and west. Enclosed on its side and rear boundaries, the building makes its primary gesture to the street. Here, capturing the sun’s full spectrum across the changing day and seasons, the lofted roofs of the uppermost apartment evoke a series of waves in concrete.
Substantial community consultation resulted in many adjustments being made on the path to the final design. Inclusive of its neighbours, the project signifies a new approach to the challenge of residential flat building within a suburban context.
