The new Portuguese headquarters of Fromm Packaging Systems sits in the Passil industrial estate at Alcochete, across the estuary from Lisbon: 2,000 m² of building on a 4,000 m² plot, warehouse and workshops behind, offices in front.
The industrial half is the expected thing — a clean metal shed. The office block in front is not. It is a plain white two-storey volume whose short end is cut away and replaced entirely by glass, and inside that double-height glazed corner a single concrete stair rises free of the walls, its underside folding in the air like a piece of sculpture. Everything else in the building is subordinate to it: the glass partitions on the upper floor, the ring light hung in the void, the long window bands that pull the flat landscape of the estuary in across the office floors.
The glazing carries a green-blue tint, and the interiors are photographed as they actually read from inside — every white surface takes the colour of the glass, and the light shifts through it over the course of the day. The aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling are by ROCAE. The building also carries photovoltaic panels and EV charging points.
