The Gruson site in Amiens, once a vital energy source for the Amiens tramway and later a thriving factory in the 20th century, is undergoing a transformation into a hub of urban life for the city. Our project seeks to redefine the site's significance on a city-wide level by integrating it with the St Leu district and its picturesque canal bank landscape.
Mixed Programming
Our modern adaptation of the factory promises to offer the citizens of Amiens an exceptional and lively urban space to relish.
To ensure that the site is bustling with activity around the clock, seven days a week, our project incorporates a diverse range of programming. This includes a co-living residential component and commercial spaces at the street and waterfront levels. The mix of programming aligns with the bustling and dynamic ethos of the St Leu district, fostering a vibrant atmosphere throughout the site.
Maintenance and Renovation
The project entails the preservation and restoration of the Halle des Machines, while elevating the three other halls and renovating the facades on the Boulevard du Cange.
To maintain the compositional harmony of the Saint Leu district, the volumes of the structures will adhere to a limited height and strict alignment with the Boulevard side.
Reappropriation of the Site
The project's major activities lie in the re-appropriation of the site and the canal's banks by the residents of Amiens.
To achieve this, we propose opening a public passageway linking the Boulevard du Cange and the counter-tow path through the volume of the Halle des Machines. This new space will be extended at the level of the canal by the creation of a widened quay, allowing the café located on the counter towpath to have an exceptional terrace.
