The ITE Headquarters and Technical Institute was a complex project that called for substantial additions to the existing curvilinear block sitting on an awkwardly shaped plot that sloped towards the noisy Ayer Rajah Expressway.
Considering these conditions, the resolution relied on clear zoning, simple geometry and a crisp architectural vocabulary. The first point is exemplified in the planning of locations, as noisier accommodation like playground spaces, gymnasium and mechanical engineering workshops are located nearer the expressway, while the lecture and administration areas are situated further in the site towards Vocational Drive. The second point is illustrated through a 10-storey tower that reconciles the geometries of the existing curvilinear block and the new teaching wing, while providing an iconic and inviting entrance.
The complex site organisation is balanced by the simplicity of external design elements. Aluminium curtain walling and a steel roof display an understated yet elegant way of working within boundaries
