Located in Fort Worth's established University West neighborhood, near Colonial Country Club, High View Terrace is a 5,700-square-foot residence designed around the evolving rhythms of family life. The five-bedroom, six-bathroom home brings a contemporary clarity to familiar residential forms, balancing the clients' appreciation for traditional architecture with a more open, light-filled approach to living.
The clients came to A. Michael Architecture from a conventional home that no longer supported the way their family lived. Its compartmentalized layout offered limited connection between rooms and did not adequately accommodate their active lifestyle or frequent gatherings. Their brief called for a home that could feel refined without becoming formal, a place equally suited to everyday routines, entertaining, and the changing needs of a growing family.
Rather than rejecting tradition, the design reinterprets it. Familiar proportions and a welcoming residential character are achieved through restrained detailing, expansive openings, and a stronger relationship between interior and exterior spaces. The result is a modern transitional home that feels grounded within its neighborhood while expressing a distinct architectural identity.
A wraparound porch defines the home's relationship with its backyard. More than a familiar exterior gesture, it forms a habitable buffer between the house and landscape. The covered space creates opportunities for quiet mornings, informal conversations, and evening gatherings while moderating the transition between indoors and outdoors. It also gives the sizeable residence a more intimate, human-scaled edge.
Internally, the plan is organized around a deliberate balance of openness and retreat. Shared living spaces are closely connected, allowing the kitchen, dining, and living areas to function as a continuous setting for family life and entertaining. Circulation is integrated into these spaces rather than treated as a series of isolated corridors, creating intuitive movement through the house and maintaining visual connections across the main level.
Expansive windows draw natural light deep into the interior and frame views toward the tree-lined backyard. The main living areas extend visually into the covered outdoor spaces, the pool, and the surrounding landscape, making the rear garden part of the home's daily experience. This connection provides a sense of openness while the arrangement of private rooms preserves moments of separation and quiet.
The upper level is dedicated in part to the family's youngest members. A generous playroom provides a flexible setting for creativity and activity, giving children a space of their own while remaining connected to the broader life of the house. Together with the outdoor living areas and pool, it allows the residence to accommodate different ages, activities, and degrees of privacy simultaneously.
Throughout High View Terrace, architectural decisions were guided not only by appearance but by the experience of living in the home. Daylight, comfort, durability, and long-term well-being were considered alongside proportion, material, and detail. Completed in 2024, High View Terrace demonstrates how traditional residential character can be carried forward without relying on imitation.
