Hoopla Donuts was McKinley Burkart's fifth endeavor with local favourites Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters. For their foray into the world of donuts (grounded in an expertise in coffee shops), we developed a concept that would be the embodiment of this perfect pairing. Inspired by the innate comfort and excitement that comes from thinking about this sweet duo, and invigorated by bold graphics by Daughter Creative, the interior design concept offers a minimalist backdrop for the bold branding and colorful confectioneries of Hoopla.
Soft, playful tones are paired with common construction materials, like birch plywood and concrete, to offer an unexpected experience. Details are minimal, simplified and not too serious. The material palette is clean and simple and revolves around the use of existing concrete and painting out an exposed ceiling. By uncovering the elements of the existing space the design reveals a new volume and brightness that brings new life to this busy downtown thoroughfare. Unique elements such as the dichroic glass window inserts and colourful tile were inspired by the brand colours and donut glaze. Direct visuals to donuts being made by hand combined with the intoxicating smell of fresh coffee result in blissful sensory overload. It’s all about creating joy whether you are passing by or stopping in.
