House Eight Ninths

The project is located on the coastal edge of Punta Hueso, in the Coquimbo region of Chile—a setting dominated by the coastline, rocky outcrops, and the low-to-medium-height vegetation characteristic of the country's near north (Norte Chico). The design is based on a grid of nine quadrants, consisting of eight perimeter wooden quadrants and a central circular concrete one. This central quadrant rises to serve as the home's entrance by way of a sculptural element, a project in its own right: a helical staircase. The house is elevated to protect the local flora under preservation, while simultaneously maximizing unobstructed 360-degree views of its surroundings.

The main structure of the house consists of glued laminated timber (glulam) beams that transfer their load to the central reinforced concrete quadrant. Secondary beams with a smaller cross-section are arranged over the main beams, topped by purlins to form the elevated platform of the main floor.

Upon completing the journey up this sculptural staircase, the main entrance opens into a small distribution hall. In one direction, this hall connects directly to the public areas of the house—comprising the living room, dining room, and kitchen—which are distributed across three of the eight wooden quadrants. In the opposite direction lies the private wing, featuring a bedroom and an en-suite bathroom spread across two quadrants.

From the beginning, the simplicity of the spatial experience was a key requirement. Consequently, it made sense to extend this concept outdoors through a balcony that, thanks to the orientation of the volume, offers a privileged view of the Pacific Ocean. To complement this, the balcony occupies the three remaining quadrants, providing an ideal vantage point to enjoy the gradual sunset over the sea.
