Individuality and Community

The project is an interpretation of the urban planning concept for the new extension of the city of Bern. The spatial definition of the block is a major objective. The housing project is built on two plots and conceived as one single but diversified composition. Freestanding urban villas connected with bridges form the finely articulated urban tissue. Each house has four floors. Each floor is one apartment. The sequence of houses and courts offers the possibility to live between the specially planted trees. The access to the apartments is ensured through three main staircases with elevators. The way over the court and the bridges offers a spacial experience and encourages social contact. The carrying structure allows the adaptation of the apartments plans to changing needs of the inhabitants. The quality of the apartments is characterised through the four-sided orientation, the generous balconies and terraces, the relation of interior and exterior space and the flexibility of space accommodation. The central court and the climbing wisterias along the bridges mark the identity of the housing project. „come west“ realises an inversion of the classical disposition of private and public space and offers a particular form of urbanity in the new neighbourhood Brünnen. The common urban space is situated in the centre of the block, the semi-public garden areas at the periphery of the housing project. The realisation respects the prerogatives of sustainability and permits low energy consumption.
