The IMC Trading office in Mumbai, designed and built by Space Matrix, is conceived as a spatial system driven by movement, clarity, and performance. As a global trading firm, IMC Trading required a workplace that could accommodate high-density collaboration alongside focused, individual work. The planning strategy responds through a structured yet continuous layout, where spatial organisation, material, and circulation work together to define distinct but connected environments.
The new IMC Trading office in Mumbai is organised as a continuous spatial sequence, where movement and interaction shape the workplace experience.
The plan is anchored by a central social hub that acts as the primary point of convergence. This space integrates the cafeteria, breakout areas, and informal meeting zones into a single, open environment. It accommodates multiple uses across the day, from individual pauses to collective gatherings.
From this central zone, the workspace extends outward into more structured areas. Open workstations are arranged to maintain visual connectivity, supporting collaboration and awareness across teams. In contrast, enclosed and acoustically treated spaces provide areas for focused work.
The transition between these zones is gradual. Rather than relying on rigid partitions, spatial changes are defined through layout, material, and light. This creates a layered environment where different modes of work coexist within a cohesive framework.
Materiality reinforces this organisation. Timber is used across key surfaces to introduce warmth and continuity. Concrete and metal elements provide durability and visual grounding. Accent colours are applied selectively to define specific zones within the larger floorplate.
Circulation is direct and legible, allowing for intuitive movement across the office. The layout avoids unnecessary complexity, ensuring clarity in both navigation and use.
Flexibility is integrated through modular furniture systems, enabling the workspace to adapt over time. Lighting is evenly distributed to support visual comfort, while acoustic treatments are incorporated to manage sound across open areas.
The result is a workplace defined by spatial clarity and continuity, where planning, material, and movement work together to support a range of work environments within a unified whole.
