Known for the lotus shape of its dominant peak, Mount Jiuhua in Anhui province of China has long been a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site shrouded in a sea of clouds.Against this cinematic landscape, Jiuhuashan MoMc Hotel is designed to offer a holistic journey embodying the essence of Zen culture. From tea ceremony, meditation, healthy dining to refined living, guests can get blissfully refuelled in a tranquil sanctuary where nature and culture meet. The overall design is also about bringing back a modest village lifestyle in a contemporary setting, enriched by the local context.
Paying homage to mirror as a well-recognized Buddahist symbol of primordial purity, the undulating passages and pools right at the entrance engage guests in twinkling reflections of water and light. The subtle yet authentic aura of this hotel begins at the lobby with a well-curated mix of new and old elements, including locally sourced and recycled materials which are environmentally-friendly, while reinforcing the Buddhist idea of rebirth within the design.
A polished white brick wall, an elm-wood reception table, delicate bamboo light fixture, alongside dark structural tiles and wooden frame, present an intricate mix of materials and textures. Echoing the natural elegance at the entrance, the restaurant’s overall design is complemented by wicker chairs and tables, which invigorate the historic touch into an authentic dining experience.
Peacefully watched over by an abstract Buddha statute, the leisure area is also transformed by the furnishings of a subtle palette. Stylistically inspired by the ancient and the new, its layout tactically blends together time and space, and opens up a view of neighbouring attractions.
Working with local heritage consultants to recreate structural details from the bygone era, the design team has devoted special attention to the Zen corner, which weaves together indigenous architectural traditions through thoughtful juxtaposition of myriad textures. Here, heritage remnants from local Anhui villages have been meticulously pieced back together on site, recreating the historic splendour and cosy domesticity for quiet reflection with fitting mats. Completing this spiritual dialogue with nature are intimate room designs under various themes, where guests are invited to an airy, spacious backdrop for replenish their energy.
