Merwede is being developed in Utrecht: one of the largest inner-city, car-free neighbourhoods in the Netherlands. Within this ambitious development, LEVS is designing block 9, called Joy. It combines varied living with urban functions and nature-inclusive tranquillity. The block is centrally located in Merwede, close to the canal but enclosed by other blocks. On the north and south sides, it borders a city square, and on the east and west sides, residential streets. The block embraces a serene natural garden, accessible via two passageways.
A representation of the city
Joy is a representation of the city in itself. All kinds of housing types alternate: townhouses, single-family homes, porch houses, gallery houses, corridor houses. With this differentiated composition, Joy is designed for the long term, while retaining its liveliness. But amenities are also an indispensable part: a community centre, a youth lounge and a restaurant ensure connection between residents.
Rich architecture that ages beautifully
Joy's careful detailing ensures that the block will age beautifully. The project combines many different materials, such as wooden facades, brick in various designs, ceramic elements and bamboo. We work with low-carbon concrete, timber frame construction for the single-family homes and bio-based materials. Nature-inclusive applications come to life in the courtyard garden and the wall plantings. House and building sizes alternate at a pleasant pace. This, too, feels like a representation of the city itself.
Merwede: a neighbourhood with a mission
The developing Merwede is no ordinary residential area. It combines a car-free concept with an energy-neutral system – the largest underground thermal energy storage system in the Netherlands – and a high degree of inner-city densification and greening. The urban quality is reflected in several facets: a healthy mix of functions (from market halls to schools), various types of housing for first-time buyers, families and the elderly, and meeting places that vary from lively to quiet. Everything has been thought through on a human scale.
