The team of the sewage treatment plant of the Hoogheemraadschap (HHNK) was previously spread across six locations. Over time, there was a growing need to work together as a team on one location. A former laboratory space in Alkmaar became available and turned out to be a good fit. Arconiko was asked to design a transformation of the space that would enable the team to collaborate effectively.

The assignment went beyond simply creating a functional workspace; the new layout needed to strengthen the sense of team spirit. In this design, the principles of ‘Het Nieuwe Werken’ (HNW) were applied, with Arconiko putting the design at the service of the users — not the other way around.

For many people, working no longer means sitting at a desk all day. The work environment has become more dynamic, with a mix of individual tasks and teamwork, as well as formal and informal meetings. To make sure the design really worked for the team, Arconiko held extensive consultations with the users. This led to a defined need for several specific working methods with corresponding workspaces. Workspaces as ‘compartment workstations’, a space with a standing table, a worktable by the window, a ‘living room’ area, and a ‘touchdown table’.

The ground floor canteen is also being updated with a new kitchen featuring an extended wall, allowing all equipment to be integrated and making it possible for more people to gather in this space for meetings.

The result is a dynamic layout designed for different types of work, offering space for both concentration and interaction in the workplace. For us, a good office design starts with understanding how people work and what they need. When the design matches the reality of daily work, it increases job satisfaction and strengthens team spirit.

The location of the space has been optimally utilized. The building, dating from the 1950s, features a beautiful large glass façade overlooking the green surroundings. That outdoor space now feels like a natural extension of the office.
