The much-loved Kettle's Yard House and Gallery began life as the home of curator and art collector Jim Ede and is now part of the University of Cambridge. Jamie Fobert Architects’ major building project involved a series of gentle additions to the original building, to offer new contemporary galleries and greatly improved support services for visitors and staff.

A new entrance and spacious welcome area give clear access to all the different elements of Kettle’s Yard – the original House, the old and new galleries, the new education spaces, archive and project space, a new shop and a new café.The new, fully accessible education wing expands education space at Kettle’s Yard by almost 200 per cent. It incorporates a double-height Clore Learning Studio, with generous spaces, at basement level. On the upper floors, open to everyone, are a new archive, with archival exhibition space and research space, plus a project and learning space. Two spacious new gallery spaces have been built, suitable for larger works than it was previously possible to exhibit. There is also a very small display space allowing art to be viewed from the street.

We chose to continue to work with materials, such as brick and rugged timber, that Sir Leslie Martin and David Owers employed. New materials, such as the fine dark bronze framing the new entrance doors, are distinct but harmonious.
