Down to Earth

Krume Bäker’s is a testament to the seamless integration of tradition, sustainability, and modern design. Rooted in the bakery’s Austrian origins, the project translates its commitment to quality, simplicity, and heritage into a design that caters to contemporary expectations while situating itself firmly in the Panamanian context.

A defining feature of the space is the compacted earth bar and walls, crafted using a traditional Panamanian construction technique. This locally sourced, minimally processed material offers both functional and aesthetic benefits. Its application involved collaboration with local artisans, ensuring high craftsmanship and reinforcing cultural significance. The earthy tones and textures evoke a sense of environmental harmony, aligning with the bakery’s philosophy of simplicity and naturalness.

Complementing these elements, custom-designed furniture by Mallol Lifestyle Studio utilizes reclaimed wood sourced from one of Panama’s main lakes. Salvaged through meticulous extraction, this material reflects ecological responsibility while enriching the space’s warm ambiance. Each piece—from tables to chairs—carries a narrative of renewal, blending traditional practices with modern design sensibilities.

The flexible layout accommodates diverse uses, from quick visits to leisurely meals.  Open pathways ensure easy navigation, while strategic seating arrangements cater to individuals and groups. Community-oriented design mitigates the isolation often associated with modern urban life. Lighting highlights the bakery’s core product—its bread—underscoring its identity and enhancing the ambiance.
