Taylor Kurtz was engaged by Kwantlen Polytechnic University to redevelop their admissions and student services wing at their Langley campus. The project involved extensive program evaluation and is Targeted for LEED® Silver certification. The new facility provides state of the art conference facilities equipped with full media capability as well as informal student gathering space, general office space, counselling rooms, and storage.
The design incorporates several unifying elements including a 200 ft long fritted glass wall that provides views to the outside, transparency of operations and the filtration of natural light deep into the floor plan. The transparency changes density as needed in areas where privacy is required. This newly created openness creates a welcoming environment as well as promoting an International or Global Aesthetic that Kwantlen were seeking to attract international students.
The primary circulation spine serves not only as an access route but also as a space for pause and congregation; for informal gathering where students can interact. It encourages casual learning outside the classroom through casual debate. These incidental spaces and the activities that occur in them contribute positively to the campus heart and soul.
