EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT REDEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION

Lasalle Hospital’s redevelopment and expansion project is part of the institution’s outlined master plan. The interventions bring coherence to the whole by bringing forth required departmental adjacencies, highlighting the entrances and access points and developing a functional hierarchy of circulation. In order to meet the hospital’s needs, the project proposes, in addition to the expansion, a major redevelopment. A new main entrance, ground floor entry, light and airy waiting rooms, a fully redesigned, state of the art emergency department as well as the reorganisation of outpatient clinics, day medicine and of the administrative department, are among the main transformations. The result is a 3,000m2 addition and 2,600m2 interior renovation. Despite the complexity stemming from the project’s location near the hospital’s nerve center, the project achieves increased clarity and greatly simplifies circulations with the creation of a public circulation at the building’s front. The new façade directs visitors by clearly distinguishing the main public entrance and the emergency entrance, visually it confers a secondary role to the covered vehicular entrance reserved for emergency vehicles. The façade’s frontality and the sobriety of the tectonic vocabulary coupled with the bright white siding connects the intervention to the existing complex. The use of color for the canopy soffits reveal the form and add playfulness to the contemporary design. Large windows allow the color to penetrate into the waiting areas, creating a clear distinction between each component and emphasizing their specific functional affiliation.
