Caulfield Wright Architects were winners in the Interiors category of the Natural Stone Awards 2022, run by the Stone Federation Great Britain, for our feature stairs in this new contemporary family home in Malahide, Co. Dublin.
Situated on an elevated site with spectacular and uninterrupted views of the Dublin Coastline, the Irish Sea and Lambay Island, the house replaced a 1970s bungalow in poor condition. The site is next door to a Martello Tower, a protected structure constructed between 1800-1810 and with protected Austrian Pine Trees along the boundary between the two properties.
The bespoke solid stone contemporary post tensioned staircase forms the focal point of the interior. This staircase uses traditional craftsmanship with blocks of solid stone cantilevering out of the walls leaving uninterrupted space in the hall below. This is juxtaposed with a light contemporary balustrade with narrow steel rods set into the stone with a seamless timber handrail tying it together. A view of the sea is framed on the first floor as you ascend the staircase.
