In dialogue with existing structures
The school echoes the iconic Briqueterie building, reflecting its north–south orientation and thereby establishing it as an important element within the neighbourhood, affirming its status as a public facility.
The school adapts to the general topography of the site (around 3 metres elevation gain) by means of a succession of ramps and terraces from the new roundabout to the back of the site.
Orientating the project
Making use of its advantageous bioclimatic north–south orientation, the project is organised into a succession of different areas moving from the public space through to the heart of the school.
The main building holds the entrance hall, classrooms, administrative offices and the multi-purpose hall.
The second building houses the canteen – kitchens and dining rooms. It is extended to the west by covered play areas and playgrounds.
The backbone and its ‘ribs’
A broad walkway in red concrete leads from the mineral forecourt at the entrance of the site, constituting a major structural element within the project.
It runs through the hall and between the canteen building and covered play areas, out to the northern extremity of the site.
Acting as the ‘backbone’ from which the various elements of the project stem, this axis organises circulation so as to make the overall layout clearly understandable and easy to navigate.
Space for planting
The project is surrounded by a planted area that encloses it from its surroundings.
A landscaped gulley runs between the car park and the building’s south facade, helping with water retention and distancing classrooms from the public space.
They are broken up by planted areas and large trees, which provide a cooling effect.
An educational kitchen garden/ orchard area is located between the two playgrounds
Materials
The materials used are raw, sustainable, local and low-carbon.
The gable walls, which are exposed to the dominant winds, and the south side of the ground floor, open to public space, are in brick for greater durability. Brick is a major vernacular element in the area so its use is well-founded.
The facades on the north side and on the upper level, less exposed, are clad in wood with vertical slats, providing warmth and a contemporary touch.
The small elements of outdoor furniture (benches, seating) are in raw, hard-wearing concrete.
Thermal and acoustic comfort
Summer comfort is an important factor today, particularly in schools.
Geothermics, the geocooling system, and the use of CEB play an important role in maintaining the internal atmosphere. Only the dining rooms are equipped with air conditioning.
Solar shading on the south side is dimensioned to allow for heat gain in the winter and provide shade in the summer. The brick screen on the forecourt casts shadows on the ground and filters the light in the entrance, creating an atmosphere conducive to concentration.
The full-width hall, large classroom windows, and windows in the corridors all contribute to natural ventilation and heat extraction, while providing views over the landscape.
