Lincoln Castle Revealed, a £20 million project funded by the Heritage Lottery fund and Lincolnshire County Council, required a major upgrade to the Prison and Castle buildings, enabling full public access throughout the Castle and re-ordering of the Prison to provide a new shop, café, general visitor facilities along with interpretation and exhibitions describing prison life. A new exhibition space was created within one of the Prison courtyards displaying Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest and also providing a ‘cinema in the round’ in order to explain the significance of Magna Carta. All the mural fabric of the Castle walls and structures were carefully repaired and a new passenger lift and spiral staircase with a system of bridges and links installed to enable a full circuit of the Castle walls and give disabled access to the East wall.
