Located in the historic heart of Como, this renovation of a 100 sqm 1970s apartment stems from the desire to create a seamless symbiosis between the space’s strong original character and a refined, contemporary architectural vision. The pre-existing home possessed a distinct personality, enriched by a curated collection of decorative objects and classic artworks. The main design challenge was to honor this heritage, preserving its memory while infusing the interiors with fresh energy, natural brightness, and fluid, open layouts. A continuous material thread weaves throughout every room through the careful selection of noble finishes and delicate architectural details. Rich natural marbles, original polished dark terrazzo, and classic natural oak parquet in herringbone and square cassette patterns create a sinuous transition from space to space, framing sculpted archways and curated views.
A characteristic element of the new dining area is the custom round table designed and crafted by Atelier Anna Arpa specifically for the client: a unique bespoke creation featuring a top with a captivating, sinuous graphic pattern in Rio palisander paired with a sculpted circular base in fluted wood. Placed beneath classic artwork and framed by soft architectural arches, the table stands alongside sling leather dining chairs and a cluster glass chandelier as the ultimate synthesis of heritage, art, and high-end contemporary design. In the living room, low-profile modular seating in textured bouclé and the iconic Togo armchair by Ligne Roset invite relaxed conversation, illuminated by a Venetian blown glass drop chandelier and vintage Italian glass light sculptures. The open kitchen transitions smoothly into the living space, defined by a dramatic island in polished Fior di Bosco marble, warm timber cabinetry, Flos lighting fixtures such as the Skygarden suspension lamp and Taccia table lamp, and sleek matte black fittings. The bathroom continues this tactile material dialogue with vein-cut travertine surfaces and minimalist black shower fixtures.
Embracing a sustainable design approach, the project prioritizes adaptive reuse by preserving historical architectural elements and restoring original stone floors, significantly reducing embedded carbon. Custom furniture and tailored architectural joinery were crafted locally with regional artisans to minimize transportation impact while supporting traditional craftsmanship. The layout was carefully reconfigured with open sightlines and arches to maximize natural daylighting throughout the apartment, while durable, natural materials like solid timber, stone, and leather ensure longevity and a timeless aesthetic.
