Lleva't Bakery

Forn Lleva’t transforms a former warehouse on Carrer dels Fossos, in the historic heart of Avinyonet de Puigventós, into an artisanal bakery that restores the tradition of bread and places it once again at the center of the town’s everyday life. More than a renovation, the intervention is a careful reading of place: an architecture that listens, interprets, and supports. The space, rich in memory and matter, unfolds as a sequence of three interlinked areas, each with its own scale, construction system, and character. This succession constructs a coherent, functional, and, above all, living spatial narrative.

The first space, located at the corner of Carrer dels Fossos and Carrer Bellaire, is a large, open volume supported by a central column and covered by three ceramic vaults and a concrete beam-and-slab ceiling. This space, the physical and symbolic heart of the project, houses the main tasks of the bakery: manual work, dough handling, and bread preparation. Its open, undivided geometry turns the production process into a visible and shared route, where architecture acts as the stage and support of the craft.

From this central core, the project flows into a second, narrower area, topped with a ceramic half-vault, which contains the fermentation chamber and auxiliary work zones. This direct connection ensures functional continuity while maintaining the material and structural coherence of the whole.

The sequence closes with a third, wider space, with its own entrance from Carrer Bellaire and covered by a half-vault of stone and lime mortar. This area accommodates storage and sanitary services—logistical supports for daily activity that don’t interrupt the smoothness of the whole.

The project is grounded in a respectful attitude toward the existing building. The stone walls, ceramic ceilings, irregular textures, and traces of time are embraced as part of the site’s character. The architecture doesn’t erase; it reveals. Surfaces are cleaned and repointed to recover the material essence, with a delicacy that avoids reconstruction and favors an honest reading of each layer.

This existing matter dialogues with a new functional layer, defined through a constructive language that is both honest and efficient. The floor is resolved with polished concrete slightly tinted in earthy tones, providing unity and warmth. On this chromatic base, the walls are organized in two bands: up to 90 centimeters high, large-format ceramic pieces in earthy tones provide strength and ease of cleaning at work surface height; from there up to two meters, a strip of small, glazed white tiles wraps the space, enhancing the light and dignifying everyday gestures.

The existing openings are preserved, maintaining their proportions and the relationship with the street, while the woodwork is renewed in a dark-stained natural wood that harmonizes with the material palette. The main entrance is resolved with a convertible window that can serve either as a point of sale or as a large door that blurs the boundary between street and workshop.

The furniture is arranged around the central column following a circular logic, avoiding crossings and encouraging a clear and sequential production flow. The pieces are organized by function and material: mobile beechwood work tables that allow spatial flexibility; fixed stainless steel equipment for cleaning and support tasks; and the oven—centerpiece of the bakery—strategically placed beneath the concrete ceiling, which allows for a technical false ceiling to accommodate services while preserving the integrity of the vaulted volumes.

Forn Lleva’t is a project that emerges from its context and puts itself at the service of a craft. It does not invent, but refines; it does not impose, but collaborates. In its material humility, clarity of order, and thoughtful decisions, it finds a profound beauty. It brings the act of breadmaking back to the street, inviting others to look, participate, and recognize. In this simple and shared gesture, the project reaffirms that architecture can also be a way to preserve memory, transmit knowledge, and weave community.
