On Schiermonnikoog, children grow up in a community where everything feels close: the landscape, the seasons and the people around them. Learning and Development Centre De Viermaster builds on this sense of connection with a continuous learning environment for young islanders from 0 to 16 years old. From childcare and primary education to secondary school and the Schier Academy, the building brings learning, development and community together in one place, firmly rooted in island life.
The design starts from this idea. The school is conceived as a compact and welcoming building that wraps around the existing sports hall. By integrating this hall into the new whole, a single place is created for learning, sport and community life. The decision to retain and upgrade the existing structure gives the project an inherent sustainability: building on what is already there, with a new addition that strengthens the existing fabric.
Architecturally, LOC De Viermaster is closely connected to Schiermonnikoog. The timber façades and generous areas of glazing give the building a light, open character, in keeping with the scale and atmosphere of the island. The green roofscape is slightly rotated in relation to the main volume and is oriented towards two local landmarks: the harbour and the lighthouse. In this way, the building gains a distinct identity on each side, while its roof forms relate to the characteristic architecture of the surrounding area.
The heart of the school faces the village centre. Here, the central meeting space with its stepped seating, the cooking café, the atelier and the music room form places where learning, making, cooking, presenting and meeting naturally overlap. Around this heart are the learning plazas and classrooms, while the secondary school has its own place on the upper floor. The result is a building that feels clear and accessible for younger children, yet mature enough for older pupils.
Island life is also woven into the interior design. Nautical references to ropes, nets and maritime structures return in the materials, patterns, wall finishes and tiling, giving the interior a character that feels both contemporary and unmistakably connected to Schiermonnikoog.
Located in the Nieuw-Dokkum neighbourhood, designated as a testing ground for a natural gas-free district, the LOC also forms part of Schiermonnikoog’s sustainable future. The building is therefore more than an educational facility: it is a focal point within a neighbourhood working towards a new energy system and a future-proof community.
LOC De Viermaster is a building that respects the scale of Schiermonnikoog, strengthens its community and gives young people the space to grow on their own island.
