Loftus Road

X.PACE as Architects

This is an apartment building situated in one of the steepest streets in Sydney. The west facing orientation presents the views of water, city, Harbour Bridge. To the north is a massive 1960’s apartment block which dominates the area. There are 5 apartments and all of them have been oriented to the view or to the north for sun. The building was designed as two geometric elements - the upper one containing 3 single apartments each on one floor and lower one containing 2 two storey ones still with a view but also with the garden.

The two building elements turn and twist to make the most of the orientation, views and to neutralise the apartment block to the north. The building is designed to be geometrically strong, but clean, elegant and simple. Despite the difficulties of the site we have managed to give each apartment beautiful and smooth flow, balconies, gardens, parking and most importantly views and sunlight.
